ENHANCE YOUR PRANAYAMA PRACTICE with Heather Haxo Phillips (3/3)

Enhance Your Pranayama Practice
for Intermediate Practitioners
with Heather Haxo Phillips

Three Friday mornings in 2020: December 4, 11 and 18
7 – 8 am PST

Pranayama is a deeply transformative practice on all levels, physical and emotional. It is your daily opportunity to connect with your embodiment, taking a dip into the deep quiet and expansiveness inside yourself. Being with a community of people committed to the same endeavor is a valuable opportunity to learn techniques and approaches that can inspire and direct your practice.

The foundation for pranayama is the position of the spinal column. If the spinal column is not alert, the fruit of the pranayama practice cannot be experienced. Our sessions will focus on how to work with our body to establish an alert spinal column, both in the reclining and sitting pranayamas.

This December series held via Zoom will focus on the transition from lying to sitting pranayama. We will look at specific techniques for reclining pranayama that are incredibly effective, but rarely taught in public classes. And, we will look at sitting options including the use of the wall and the chair. You will receive valuable guidance on seated Ujjayi and Viloma, specifically Ujjayi V – VIII and Viloma IV – VI.

Therapeutics Six-week Series with Elise Miller

Wednesdays 7:30 PM - 9:00 PM Oct 09 2019 - Nov 14 2019

Brief Description: This six-week series is designed for those either living with chronic conditions
or recovering from injury or surgery that prevent them from participating in a
general class. Therapeutic yoga can help with a range of conditions from structural
issues such as severe scoliosis, frozen shoulder, or joint pain, to diseases or
disorders such as heart disease, high or low blood pressure, cancer, diabetes,
arthritis, and CFS, and even mental health issues like anxiety or depression.

Each student will be given an individualized sequence designed specifically
for his or her condition. Each week, that sequence will be practiced with the
guidance and instruction of the teachers. The goal is for the student to become
adept in practicing their sequence independently.

Benefits of the class include:
• Learn how to manage stress and discomfort through yoga postures
• Increase strength, flexibility and stamina in the muscles, joints and bodily systems
• Become proficient in modifications of common yoga poses in order to participate
in general classes.

Series will be limited to six students. Student selection will be based on review
of an Intake Questionnaire. To request a copy of the Intake Questionnaire, email
us at info@californiayoga.com. Return the form to us by email or regular mail.
If you are selected to participate in the Therapeutics Series, we will follow up to
confirm dates of attendance. You can pay for the course by phone or in person.
Students are expected to attend all sessions, no make-up classes or refunds for
missed sessions.

Series fee is $240.

Sequencing Under the Microscope with Michael Lucey

Sequencing Under the Microscope with Michael Lucey

Brief Description: We often think of sequencing as the order of poses from the beginning of the class to the end, but sequencing is more than that. It can also happen within a single asana, in the way that you work through different aspects of the pose. Or supposing you do the same asana several times, how will your attention shift each time? What is your goal as you construct a sequence?

“The structure of evolution and progress in all things has its own inner logic and harmony. This is sequence, or krama ,” BKS Iyengar wrote. He was commenting on one of the Patanjali Yoga Sutras: krama anyatvam parinama anyatve hetuh. Iyengar translates this sutra as “Successive sequential changes cause the distinctive changes in the consciousness,” and he comments that, “differences in changes in consciousness are caused by the changing order of sequences in the method of practice.” Our focus in the workshop will be on how sequencing can be harmonious and logical not only from pose to pose, but also on the level of each individual pose.

Our goal will be to explore the paths that lead to “distinctive changes in the consciousness.” Our sequence will include standing poses, seated twists, backward extensions, and inversions.
